An escape to remember in Olbia

by Claudia on Sep 1, 2016

Exploring the delights of Northern Sardinia

Sparkling turquoise oceans and cultural experiences galore await visitors to Northeastern Sardinia, and chances are you’ll find yourself passing through Olbia on your way. However Olbia is far from simply a transit point – with a name that means ‘happy land’ and an abundance of nearby attractions, it’s no wonder this Sardinian capital is becoming a popular holiday destination in its own right.

Museums and Culture in Olbia

In the heart of Olbia take some time to visit Museo Archeologico – Olbia’s harborside archaeological museum, offering an array of fascinating exhibits and free admission. The areas surrounding Olbia are a hive of cultural activity and artifacts, and prehistory enthusiasts especially will enjoy an adventure out to the impressive Nuraghic monuments in nearby Arzachena area.

Olbia, Cuisine and Entertainment

Let yourself be impressed by the knowledgeable sommeliers, enjoy gourmet food and admire the vines at the acclaimed Tenute Olbios. Perhaps you’d rather venture slightly further afield and explore the coveted white sand beaches and tourist area of Costa Smeralda, which is pleasingly close by, or enjoy a cocktail at the nearby seaside resort of Porto Cervo.

History and Architecture

Wander the backstreets of Olbia to spot the basilica of the beautiful church of San Simplicio, and peek your head in to see 11th-century Pisan-style architecture, or visit the multi-colored dome of the Chiesa di San Paolo church, built on an ancient temple site.

Getting there

Transportation is simple, with Olbia playing the role of major transportation hub between Sardinia and the Italian peninsula. The small city packs a transport punch with Costa Smeralda Airport, Olbia-Isola Bianca passenger port and the Olbia railway station. Olbia is easily accessible via ferry services from the Italian mainland, as well as from France and Spain, and once in Olbia public buses will get you wherever you need to go in Sardinia. If none of these options meet your requirements, you can always rent a car and design your own adventure!
