The History of the place
Belluno was founded by Paleovenetians as a military stronghold in the 2nd century, B.C. It later became a Roman municipality and underwent substantial urban development, some of which is still visible today on part of the small town’s main axis. The town itself represents the main part of a massive mountain region that stretches from the border of Austria all the way to Friuli. In 1404, Belluno became part of Venice, and its medieval appearance was enhanced with the Gothic-Rennaissance palazzi that are typically found in the Venetian Republic. In the Old Town, you will find many of these picturesque structures still in wonderful shape. You will be able to appreciate the colonnaded and classically-ordered features of the architectural style which blends so perfectly with the town’s lofty setting.
