Lake Sorapis, the Gem of the Dolomites

When traveling through the Dolomites of Veneto, northern Italy, do not miss the chance to take in the splendid beauty and natural wonder that is Lake Sorapis.

The lake and surrounding is located near Cortina d’Ampezzo where you can also discover three main canyons; one is the Alta Via Number 1, a famous trekking route, and lots of other activities to enjoy during your vacation. The area formed by the Canyons and waterfalls of the Rio Fanes and Rio Travenanzes are uniquely spectacular. You can explore this area simply by walking the easy path and the starting point is in Pian de Loa, at the entrance to the Natural Park of the Ampezzo Dolomites.

Sightseeing and trekking in Cortina d’Ampezzo and the Dolomites will certainly leave you breathless.

Lake Sorapis

Lake Sorapis enjoys the infamy of a local legend related to its name. In the local dialect, Ladino, Sorapis means above the waterfall. It is said that King Sorapis turned himself into a rocky mountain to protect his bewitched daughter. The daughter saw what had happened and cried tears which formed Lago di Sorapis.

The water is cool, clean and has a most intriguing baby blue color. Hikers love to explore the area and in fine weather you may see couples and families enjoying the water and sunbathing on the rocky banks of the lake. Boating and fishing are also pastimes regularly taking place by visitors.

Trekking in Cortina

Of the many places you can walk and hike the most famous walking trail is the Alta Via 1. It is a walking trail that winds through the Dolomites for 120 km. You can reach new heights (2,752 m) and enjoy a variety of sights and experiences along the way.

While this ten-day trek may be a little long, there are trails that can be followed to experience parts of the Alta Via 1 for shorter day trips. There are also more than 400km of local hiking trails that are kept in good shape and marked by local volunteers.
