La Biennale

Explore Venice during La Biennale

Every year the city of Venice holds La Biennale, one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world: established over 120 years ago, this event has today an attendance of over 500,000 visitors at the Biennale Arte, which alternates with Biennale Architettura every year.

The history of the Venice Biennale dates back from 1895, when the first International Art Exhibition was organized. In the 1930s new festivals were born: Music, Cinema, and Theatre (the Venice Film Festival in 1932 was the first film festival in history). In 1980 the first International Architecture Exhibition took place. Spread over many parts of the city, the two main venues include the Arsenale – the former shipyards of Venice, and the Giardini.

The Giardini and the Arsenale

Start your tour with a visit to the Giardini which is a nice walk along the water from St Mark’s Square. Here at the Giardini you can not only browse the contemporary art exhibition, but also some of the many pavilions created by each country. Following this, a trip to the Arsenale allows you to appreciate the exceptional venue these former shipyards provide for exhibitions. 4 hours is a good amount of time to see both the Arsenale and Giardini areas – even for a non-tour lover this is a great way to spend an afternoon!

On a final note, during the Biennale there are also many locations across the city that open their doors to the public, including palazzi that usually remain hidden to tourists. Ask your hotel Concierge for their tips on what to see across the city.

A Journey of Discovery

In 2017 the 57th International Art Exhibition, titled VIVA ARTE VIVA and curated by Christine Macel, is open to the public until Sunday 26 November 2017 and it includes 84 National Participations in the historic Pavilions at the Giardini, at the Arsenale and in the historic city center of Venice.

The exceptional numbers of the 57th Venice Art Biennale are a testimony to the great resonance of the project in the world of arts. In fact, there are 120 artists exhibiting at the Biennale Art exhibition Venice 2017, including 103 attending for the first time with a total of 51 represented countries.

Selected Collateral Events are taking place outside the institutional venues of La Biennale. This year one of the most important collateral events is hosted at the Gallerie dell’Accademia and showcases the first major exhibition held in a museum by Philip Guston.
