The Gritti Palace, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Venice celebrates its seventieth anniversary with an extraordinary collection of portraits signed by the English fashion artist David Downtown, who paid homage to some of the most famous and illustrious guests of the iconic hotel.

Eleven portraits of guests and famous personalities inextricably linked to the unique history of the hotel: from Ernest Hemingway to Somerset Maugham, from Peggy Guggenheim to Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor. This is the homage that fashion illustrator David Downton has paid to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the birth of The Gritti Palace, enriching its collection of works of art.
David Downton drew inspiration from the hotel’s Golden Book and the impressive photo gallery of famous guests displayed in the hotel’s public areas. While the watercolor illustrations of Hemingway, Maugham and Peggy Guggenheim will find their natural location not only in the suites dedicated to them and but also in the hotel lobby with eight other illustrations of famous movie stars from the ‘20s to today – Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Greta Garbo, Lauren Bacall, Charlie Chaplin, Humphrey Bogart, Paul Newman, Marcello Mastroianni – who stayed at the hotel or have been photographed there during their stays in Venice.
The legendary history of the Gritti Palace is a fascinating journey through time: it all began in 1475 when the Pisani family built the Gothic palace that in 1525 was transformed into the private residence of the Doge of Venice, Andrea Gritti. The hotel opened in 1948 under the CIGA Group and from which the current Luxury Collection are derived. For decades, the hotel’s story has been closely connected to the celebration and preservation of Art, and has become an iconic destination for generations of global travelerspersonalities from the world of art, entertainment and cinema.
David Downton has established a reputation as the world’s leading fashion artists. His illustrations are classically elegant and at the same time highly contemporary and continue to embellish glossy magazines like Vogue or Harper’s Bazar. In addition David has produced portraits from life of some of the world’s most beautiful and iconic women of fashion and cinema: Catherine Deneuve, Linda Evangelista and Paloma Picasso.
The collaboration with David Downton represents an exceptional match for The Gritti Palace. David’s portraits evoke an era of discreet and sophisticated glamor and luxury and reinforces the hotel’s position as patron of the arts.
